The same room can hold very different numbers depending on how you use it. A listing that says 100 standing may seat fewer than half of that for dinner.
Standing
The number for a reception or party where guests are on their feet. Use this for drinks, networking and most birthday parties.
Seated
The number that fits at tables for a meal. Round tables take more floor space than long ones, so ask which layout the figure is based on.
Meetings and talks
Theatre rows fit the most people, a boardroom table or U shape the fewest. If you need a screen, a stage or breakout space, the usable capacity drops again.
What to ask the venue
- Which layout is the capacity based on?
- Does it include space for a dance floor, a band or a bar?
- Is there a legal limit set by the licence or fire safety rules?
- How many people can use any outdoor area, and until what time?
